Brief history
David Wiley can be considered the author of the first conceptual MOOC, started at the University of Utah in August 2007. It was an open education course. This initiative continued in numerous projects promoted from different university centers inside and outside the United States.
A milestone in the history of MOOCs dates back to autumn 2011 when more than 160,000 people enrolled in an artificial intelligence course offered by Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig at Stanford University through a startup called Know Labs (now known as Udacity ).
Given the success and high enrollment, Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng created Coursera. Based on a technology developed at Stanford, Coursera has become a platform supported by numerous prestigious universities (Yale, Princeton, Michigan, Penn). On the east coast, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology launched MITx in an effort to provide an open online education platform. Harvard soon joined this initiative, renowned edx , which has joined other universities such as Berkeley.

This online MOOC course platform is powered by the Open University of United Kingdom, which was also joined by other study centers: Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Anglia, Exeter, King's College London, Lancaster, Leeds, Southampton, St Andrews and Warwick.
2. I learn
A free software platform to create and manage MOOC courses, accessible through the OpenMooc site and promoted by the National University of Distance Education of Spain (UNED), Telefónica, Universia and the Center for Virtual Teaching (CSEV). It offers the possibility of performing, in addition to the courses, an instance of self-evaluation as well as access to tools to analyze the learning process and rhythm.
3. Lore
A platform that encourages curiosity and includes all disciplines, for people of all nationalities and ages. It encourages exploration and learning freely to foster creativity and new ways of educating.
4. edX
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in conjunction with Harvard and Berkeley universities has developed an online course platform based on MIT Open Course Ware . At the moment the courses are limited, but its interface is brilliant and you only need to register.
5. Canvas Network
This open network of courses proposes courses for teachers, students and universities, based on the motto "Open online learning, defined by you".
The platform is based on the Google Course-Builder and is aimed at entrepreneurs. Some of the universities that sponsor the site are Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP), Murcia (UMU) and Alacant (UA).
7. Myriad X
Miriada X is the MOOC platform created by Universia and Telefónica, through which leading Latin American universities offer free online courses in Spanish and Portuguese. For those interested in continuing to learn, the platform that last November the 21st year since its launch offers courses in areas such as: Astronomy, Chemistry, Anthropology, Psychology, Arts Sciences, Law and Legal Sciences, Technological Sciences, Linguistics, Mathematics and much More.
